Crowns and Bridges in Greenwood
Helping patients maintain a healthy, functional smile for life is our passion at Greenwood Dental Surgery.
Crowns
A crown is a cap placed over a tooth’s entire visible surface to protect it from further damage. It may be needed for a tooth that is cracked, has large fillings or has had a root canal. Different materials, such as porcelain or composite, can be used depending on your specific situation.
At your first appointment, we’ll prepare the tooth’s surface and then take moulds, which we send to a quality dental lab. We’ll place a temporary cap in the meantime, and then, when your permanent restoration is ready, we’ll bring you back to make sure it fits properly. If it does, we’ll affix it using special cement.
Both of these visits will be done under a local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort.
Bridges
This type of restoration is used when there is a missing tooth or teeth. It consists of two crowns on either side of a false tooth (called a pontic), which “bridges” the gap.
This also involves a two-step procedure. Under a local anaesthetic, we will prepare the teeth on either side of the missing tooth to be the right shape. Then we’ll take a mould of those teeth to send off to the dental lab, where they will fabricate your custom bridge.
In the meantime, we will make a temporary one for you to wear until the permanent one is ready.
About three weeks later, we’ll bring you back to place your permanent bridge. We’ll ensure that it fits correctly and that your bite lines up as it should
Caring for Your Restorations
Brushing and flossing regularly, including cleaning underneath the bridge, is important to maintain optimum oral health. We also recommend coming in for regular cleaning appointments every six months.
