Crown Lengthening in Greenwood

If you have very short teeth or a “gummy” smile, crown lengthening may be a good approach for you.

What Is It?

Crown lengthening is a procedure that is performed if the visible portion of the tooth is quite short. For example, if your tooth has been damaged and we need to place a crown, there has to be enough of your natural tooth above the gumline in order to be able to glue that crown on. If there’s not enough visible tooth, we will “lengthen” the tooth by pushing the gums higher (or lower, on the bottom teeth) to expose more tooth material so we can place the crown.

This procedure is also often performed on the front upper teeth for patients with a “gummy” smile. We can push the gums up to reduce the amount of gum and show more of the tooth for a more aesthetically pleasing smile.

What to Expect

We’ll begin with a consultation and examination to determine how much lengthening needs to happen. In some more complex situations, we will refer to a specialist. In typical cases, we will perform the procedure in our clinic in one visit.

The procedure is done in the dental chair under a local anaesthetic. The healing process takes about six weeks. If we’ll be placing a crown, that will be a separate procedure once your gums have fully healed.
