Bone grafting is a process that we use in a variety of situations, such as with dental implants or to improve the aesthetics of your smile.
Tissue grafting is used to create more gum to go around an implant to make it healthier and last longer.
Bone Grafts
In general, a bone graft is needed when your own bone volume is not sufficient. If you’ve lost teeth and are replacing them with dental implants, there has to be enough underlying bone volume to support the implants. If there isn’t enough, we will use either your own bone or artificial bone substitutes that promote your own bone to grow into that void.
In some cases, we’ll use a bone graft to improve the aesthetics of the bone contours, such as when you’re missing a front tooth and we’re going to create a bridge. The bone would look odd because there is no root, so a graft will make the appearance more natural.
Tissue Grafts
Tissue grafting is also used in conjunction with placing implants. When a tooth has been removed, there may not be enough gum to completely surround the implant.
In those cases, we’ll place tissue (usually from your palate) to create more gum to protect the implant. This is usually done on the top front teeth.
